Life coaching can benefit anyone who recognises that they need to make changes in their lives or alter their outlook. Some people have clear goals but are overwhelmed as to how they will achieve them. Others may have a feeling that there is something lacking in their lives and need support in identifying what would make it better.
Life coaching is especially effective for men as it has less reliance on talking through problems than other types of psychotherapies. Males are often less comfortable talking about feelings and emotions.
When can life coaching help?
Building confidence Often people are aware that they lack confidence and it makes them unhappy. They may need extra reassurace, for example continually asking for clarification and approval at work. People may have a fear of doing presentations or making speeches. Such people are reluctant to put themselves forward and their career chances often are reduced leading to greater dissatisfaction. It's a cruel spiral. Private lives may suffer if people are not assertive enough in their relationships and their needs remain unmet. There are clear life-coaching techniques will help build confidence.
Teenagers As a teacher I do a lot of work with teenagers.Often they are struggling to get focused, and confused by the options open to them. By listening carefully, I can help them identify their goals. We can then work together to devise strategies for reaching them. This is particularly beneficial at the time when they need to make important career and college choices.
I have recently been working with Leeds Social Services on keeping youngsters out of care. Youngsters may not want to go into care but cannot see how to avoid it. Parents similarly may want to keep their children at home but need to show clear and rapid improvements in parenting. A good outcome not only improves the life chances of the young person but also saves the public purse £2500 a week!
Family relationships
Sometimes the families I work with are unhappy. Often the parents cannot see how to improve relationships. Discussion can reveal the goals they want to achieve and they can often, with help and support, devise and implement their own strategies for improvement.Sometimes small things can have a larger than expect effect.
Dealing with stress Stress can affect people in different ways. For some it may result in clinical depression and medical help should be sought. For others it may result in physical symptoms, These can be severe like back pain or irritable bowel syndrome or mild in terms of sweatiness or pulpitations. Life coaching may be of help by enabling people to put structure and goals in place thus giving a framework for progress and measurement of success. Sometimes successful people have difficulty prioritising their time and both their home life and work performance suffer due to poor time management. Life coaching can help clarify and prioritise the activities needed to reach appropriate goals.
People in trouble.
Life coaching has been successful in both the probation service and the prison service where a change of behaviour is important if the client is not to get into further trouble.
Life coaching is worth considering even if you are just a little dissatified with your life. It can help you to understand what is you “really really want”in the words of the song..
